Ayodhya's New Collection 2012

Ayodhya, a leading home decorative brand from Thailand has created a new collection for 2012.  Known for their use of unique designs of handicraft madeal fibers with water hyacinth, the company was founded in 1994 with their flagship store at Gaysorn Plaza.

Ayodhya’s founder M.L. Pawinee Sukhasvasti, a leader in the stylistic side of a rural development research project, was trying to find an innovative way to get rid of the water hyacinth which were clogging up many of the waterways in Thailand and causing a hazardous impact to the local eco-system.  She had the idea to turn the natural fiber into contemporary crafts and Ayodhya pioneered the use of water hyacinth by using it for designs for vases, trays, frames, baskets, lamps, rugs and cushions.

The water hyacinth is a spongy tropical water weed commonly found in the rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia. The spread of the plant in Thailand became so rapid that it clogged many of the country’s waterways.  Turning this weed into a cash crop has created a win win situation for the country and it’s people.

Winner of numerous awards including the Design for Asia Award, Best Designer of the Year 2007 and the prestigious 2005 G-Mark Award, most of Ayodhya designs are based on natural fibers, sourced from a network of grassroots and hill tribes. The company also provides supplementary income directly to the Thai villagers and each item made contributes to the improvement of Thailand’s river environment and provides a better living to the Thai community.
